126,520 children were born in the second quarter of 2023, a decrease of 10.5%

In the first quarter of the year, 11,000 fewer children were born than a year ago, a decline of 7.9%. On a monthly basis, February has been the month with the lowest birth registrations so far in 2023.In total, 127,676 births were registered in the first three months of the year, according to Dane.

By gender, more men than women were born, at 51% and 48% respectively; these figures followed the trend of previous years.

Causes of non-fetal deaths in children aged 1 to 5 years

The main causes of death in this age group are malformations (808 cases), respiratory diseases (697 cases), bacterial sepsis (327 cases) and acute respiratory infections (152 cases).

For men, assault and homicide are the main cause of death (3,149 deaths).

Fetal deaths by maternal age group

In the second quarter of 2023, the highest proportion of total deaths occurred in the maternal age group of 20 to 29 years, with 2,770 cases.

There were 6,012 fetal deaths reported in the second trimester

As for deaths, there were 14,658 fetal deaths recorded this year and 6,012 in the second quarter.

The goal of 0 births among 10-year-old girls will be achieved

In childhood and adolescence, the goal of zero births among 10-year-old girls is achieved. However, 1,682 births were registered for the group of 14-year-old girls. The trend continues to rise; there were 9,087 births in the group of 17-year-old girls.

Births according to mother’s origin

In the current year 2023, the highest annual decline in immigrant mothers from Venezuela is reported, with 11,541 fewer births compared to the current year 2022.

There are 1,474 births to immigrant mothers from countries other than Venezuela.

The birth rate of indigenous peoples reached 4.9% in the second quarter

The indigenous population was the ethnic group with the highest birth rate growth (4.9%), followed by the Afro-Colombian population (3.8%).

More men are born than women

By gender, the trend in births in the second quarter was 51.3% men and 48.7% women.

The downward trend in births continues

The statistics agency adds that a decline in births has been observed over the last four years. In the current year, births reached 297,756 and were therefore below the limit of 300,000.

“We are showing declines in birth rates that are below those of 2020.”
