15 killed in Soweto bar shooting, South African police say | Nation World News

A mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg’s Soweto township has killed 15 people and left others in critical condition, according to police.

Police said they are investigating reports that a group of men arrived in a minibus taxi and opened fire on some of the bar’s patrons shortly after midnight on Sunday.

The injured have been taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

The number of cartridges found at the scene indicates that a group of people opened fire at the bar, Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lt. Gen. said. Elijah Mawela.

“The primary investigation suggests that these people were enjoying themselves here, in a licensed tavern that was operating within the proper hours,” Mawela told The Associated Press.

“Suddenly they heard gunshots, that’s when people tried to run out of the tavern. We don’t have the full details at the moment as to what the motive is and why they were targeting these people,” he said. .

“You can see a high-caliber firearm was used and it was firing randomly. You can see that every single one of those people was struggling to get out of the tavern,” Mawela said.

The area where the shooting occurred was very dark, making it difficult to find people who could identify the suspects, he said.

Rifles and a 9mm caliber pistol were used in the attack, said National Police spokesman Colonel Dimakatso Sello.

In a separate incident, four people were shot to death by unknown gunmen at a tavern in Sweetwaters Township in the coastal city of Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night.

According to police, two men entered the tavern and randomly opened fire on patrons, killing two people on the spot, while two others were confirmed dead at hospital. Police said another 8 people are receiving treatment at a hospital. The deceased were between 30 and 45 years old and police are investigating charges of murder and attempted murder, police said.

“The team will work day and night to track down and arrest those responsible for this shooting,” Kwazulu-Natal Police Commissioner Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said.

The bar shooting comes two weeks after 21 teenagers were found dead at a pub in the East London city. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of those deaths, but the teens were not shot or crushed in a stampede, according to authorities.
