15-year-old Michigan indicted for shooting at Oxford high school

OXFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan (AP) – An attorney looking at criminal charges against the parents of a boy accused of killing four students in a Michigan school said Thursday that their actions went “far beyond negligence” and that the weapon “seemed to be just loose. available to a teenager.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, was charged as an adult with two dozen crimes, including murder, attempted murder and terrorism, for the Tuesday shooting at Oxford High School in Oakland County, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Detroit.

Four students were killed and seven others were injured, including a student who remained in critical condition.

“All I can say at this point is that doing this on behalf of Mom and Dad goes far beyond negligence,” said Oakland County Attorney Karen MacDonald. “Obviously, we are pursuing the shooter to the fullest. … There are other people who should be brought to justice. “

Investigators said the semi-automatic shotgun was acquired by Crumbly’s father last week.

“The parents were the only ones who could have known about access to weapons,” MacDonald told WJR-AM. The gun “seems to have been simply available to this person in the public domain.”

Jennifer and James Crumbley did not respond to a message left by the Associated Press.

Sheriff Mike Bouchard said on Wednesday that parents met with school officials about their son’s classroom behavior just hours before the shooting.

MacDonald said that information about what worried the school “is likely to become public soon.”

Crumbley stayed at the school on Tuesday and later exited the bathroom with a pistol, shooting at students in the hallway, police said.

“I just can’t find a place right now to blame anyone who worked at this school. They were terrorized, ”MacDonald said.

“Should there have been other decisions?” she said when asked about how to leave a teenager at school. “They will probably come to this conclusion. … Again, I have not seen anything that would make me think there was criminal guilt. This is a terrible, terrible tragedy. “

The Oxford school district did not comment on meeting with Crumbley’s parents before the shooting.

There is no Michigan law requiring gun owners to keep guns locked from children. William Swar, an attorney not involved in the case, said that the prosecution of the parents would require a “very thorough investigation.”

“What did they know and when did they find out?” – said Pack. “What preliminary information did they have about all this? Did they know anything about his attitude and things like that. You are talking about a very heavy burden that falls on the parents. “

In 2020, the mother of a teenager from Indiana was sentenced to probation for not carrying a weapon out of her home after her mentally ill son threatened to kill students. In 2018, he shot at his school. No one was hurt, but the boy committed suicide.

In Texas, the parents of a student accused of killing 10 people at a school in 2018 have been sued over his access to a gun.

Meanwhile, dozens of schools in southeastern Michigan canceled classes on Thursday over fears of threatening messages on social media following the Oxford shooting.

Some schools remained open with a large police presence.
