17-year-old son of Glenn Youngkin tried to vote in elections in Virginia: officials

The 17-year-old son of Virginia Governor-elect Glenn Yangkin (right) tried unsuccessfully to vote in gubernatorial elections on Tuesday, but officials say he did not violate any election laws, The Washington Post reported Friday.

Yangkin’s son, unidentified as a minor, reportedly tried twice to vote at the Great Falls Library in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Jennifer Chanty, the Democratic polling station captain, told The Post that she rejected him after checking his ID, but he came back 20 minutes later and stated that his friend of the same age could vote. Virginia does not allow 17-year-olds to vote, but they can register early if they turn 18 by election day.

Local election officials told the newspaper that the teenager did not vote and did not appear to be breaking any laws.

As former President Donald Trump blamed his 2020 election defeat with unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud, Republicans have tried to question national security in the election. This has become a problem for the GOP both up and down, as most Republicans believe Trump did indeed win the election.

Youngkin, who defeated former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) in President Joe Biden’s state by 10 percentage points, campaigned for election integrity and was criticized for appearing alongside Amanda Chase, a Virginia State Senator who fostered electoral fraud conspiracies. The Republican, a former wealth manager, has tried to push a fine line on this issue so as not to alienate both moderate and more radical voters. Before election day, he ultimately pledged to accept the final results.
