2 dead, 7 injured in knife attack on train in Germany

BERLIN ( Associated Press) — A man stabbed two people to death and wounded seven others on a train in northern Germany Wednesday before being taken into custody by police.

Federal police said the man attacked several passengers with a knife shortly before the train from Kiel to Hamburg arrived at Brockstedt station.

Juergen Henningsen, a police spokesman in the neighboring city of Flensburg, said two people died of stabbings, three were seriously injured and four others were slightly injured. No details were given about the identity of the victims.

Police said the assailant was also injured and was taken to hospital.

No information has been released on the identity of the suspect and his motives are being investigated. Police said they received information about the attacks just before 3 p.m. after train passengers called 911.

Schleswig-Holstein state interior minister Sabine Sutterlin-Wach said two people had died following the attack.

“It’s terrible,” Sutterlin-Wach told NDR public radio. “We are shocked and horrified that something like this would happen.”

Local press reported that Brockstad station was closed for several hours. The motive of the attack is under investigation.

The Deutsche Bahn railway company expressed condolences on Wednesday evening. He said that “our deepest solidarity is with the families of the victims. We wish the injured a speedy and full recovery.”
