Daria Pikulic, first leader
The opening stage of the 2023 Women’s Tour Down Under, traveling 110.4km, braved several downpours on a day marked by strong winds. After several splits of the peloton into different groups due to poor conditions, the peloton finally regrouped to decide the sprint victory.
Pikulic was fastest, with an advantage of 4 and 6 seconds over Coponi and Baker respectively, thus taking the first leader’s jersey. I can’t believe it, it’s a dream come true. I thank my teammates, they did a great job. Today we’ll toast with champagne
The winner was declared at the end of the first stage.
