26-year-old man charged with poor driving after pedestrian dies, several others injured in Toronto city crash

A 26-year-old man is facing charges of drunk driving after a pedestrian was killed and several others injured in a collision in the city on Friday night.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., emergency workers responded at the intersection of Wellington Street and University Avenue to reports of a multi-vehicle collision involving pedestrians.

Police said a 26-year-old man was driving a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Wellington Avenue West, while a 53-year-old man was driving a 2022 Honda CRV on University Avenue and a 49-year-old man was operating . A 2020 Toyota Corolla facing north on University Ave.

Police said the 26-year-old man allegedly passed through the intersection at a red traffic light and collided with a Honda and Toyota.

Two passers-by were also injured during the collision.

According to police, a 26-year-old male pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was declared brought dead on the spot.

A 32-year-old male pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

People from Honda and Toyota were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Toronto paramedics said they took a total of seven people to the hospital.

Nitin Thakur, 26, of Toronto, was arrested in connection with the incident and faces six charges, including aggravated operation death and bodily harm, over 80 operation death and bodily harm, and dangerous driving. Death and bodily harm occurred.

Thakur was to appear in the court on Saturday. The charges have not been proved.
