3 things that stood out from the Wisconsin men’s basketball team win over Texas A&M

“I would say that some of the triplets we scored at the end of the first half are what cheered us up,” Davis said. “I think we really calmed down and stopped playing at their speed, and started playing more at our speed, and that’s why we ended up winning.”

University of Wisconsin sophomore Johnny Davis talks to the media about how the Badgers took control on their way to a 69-58 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies on Monday, November 22, 2021, in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Las Vegas.

Defense subsides

Texas A&M connected most of their shots early in the first half as the UW left lanes wide open and room for shooters to connect with threes. The Uggies scored 26 points in their first 13 holdings, but the UW added defensively and Texas A&M only scored eight points in their next 20 holdings in the half.

Freshman Chucky Hepburn forced the pass from 4:36 to the end of the second half when he made Marcus Williams stutter and kick the ball back over the half-court line. The Badgers forced 16 assists and made 11.

UW capped Texas A&M to 29.6% shooting in the second half after Edgey hit 50% in the first half.

Gard said that much of the early difficulty was due to nervousness. This was the first time many UW players saw important moments in a tournament, so some adjustments were required.

He also said that when they settled on offense, it gave the UW much-needed confidence to use defensively.

“We were able to get our protection,” said Gard. “This was partly about the ball. This was partly due to getting the best shots. Free throws were part of that. We were able to get back on the defensive and minimize what they can do during the transition. They went on the attack, but at the same time, I think we were on the offensive, which helped our defense. “
