COLUMBUS, Ohio — A sad, Week 1 victory sparked genuine questions from 49ers fans. Luckily, my Instagram and Twitter mail found me on the Ohio highway as I compiled this week’s mailbag on my way to camp for 49ers West Virginia this week:
Did you see anything during camp that suggests Tre Sermon 1B won’t be back? (@SpaceKRUzer)
Cerman had a quiet practice against the Chargers and had a surprise bruise for the August 22 preseason game, with the 49ers saying he had a minor ankle injury. However, he was not on the injury report last week. Coaches were impressed by more than just Elijah Mitchell and Jaimichael Hesty with Raheem Mostart as Week 1 backup. Mostart will miss the next two months (knee-cartilage surgery), opening a space for the start of the sermon in Philadelphia on Sunday, possibly as a reserve.
What’s up with Brandon Ayuk? Is she at the doghouse? (@linuts)
“At the doghouse” might be an apt description, as he isn’t necessarily in it. This camp and preseason, Ayuk had more drops than usual, as well as a tight hamstring two weeks ago. A more decisive factor in his apparent downfall was how well Trent Sherfield performed. Sherfield received 27 photos, only one more than Ayuk, who had no aim. They will keep walking.
Fans got to see Demeko Ryan for the first time on Sunday? How did he perform in his (defensive coordinator) debut? (@john_stubbler)
That fourth-quarter freefall wasn’t reassuring. He dialed a solid call on the final, fourth-down imperfection, with Samson Abukum, Kentavius Street and Nick Bosa putting pressure on Jared Goff. What was more troubling were the easy rushing yards that were too heavy to deal damage, and the fact that his turbo-package pass crowd couldn’t quite reach the goff. Three sacks and nine pressure sounds good until you realize there were 92 snaps.
What happened to the rescue? (@hardcore_fitness_x)
A respectable start (10 points allowed through 40 minutes) was offset by a breakdown and fourth-quarter fade. Jason Verrett’s season-ending injury cast a disappointment with 7:50 remaining and 49th forward 41-17. Then the mostly second-string defense scored 16 points over the next two series, before placing the Lions just outside the red zone on the final drive.
Will Richard Sherman face league discipline if he signs with a team? (@geoffcast)
There was a domestic-violence component to his June arrest related to an incident at his in-laws’ house, but the league is not expected to join or put Sherman on the commissioner’s exemption list unless evidence proves he committed a violent crime. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network told KNBR 680-AM. “There’s always a potential for shame,” Shanahan said, “but I doubt a reunion is successful unless there are more cornerback attrition.”
You should be talking about Mostart’s wife’s post and all the hate mail she gets. it’s sad. (@kiidd__)
It is extremely disturbing and horrifying how Mostart’s wife Devon receives direct messages from people about “how my husband should kill himself, about how he should be cut, about how he is made of glass.” There is no place for such cowardly comments. Keep them – and your fantasy football lineup – up to yourself, people.
Do you think we really missed Javan Kinlaw in the run defence? (@zamprognofelipe)
You would like to think so. Kinlaw was heading for a bigger and better second season, until a knee problem worked out and kept him out of last week’s practice and this opener. DJ Jones, Zach Kerr and Kevin Givens combined for an instrumental tackle. Kinlaw is coming off an encouraging week of conditioning.
CB1 and CB2? (@p_fyfe)
Veteran Dre Kirkpatrick is reportedly entering the picture and could close out a starting spot. Rookie DiModor Lanier’s early debut was a shadowy gem. He played 90 snaps and allowed one catch (3 yards) on three goals, according to Pro Football Focus. Therefore, he will likely remain in the lineup, regardless of any praise Shanahan garners. Emmanuel Moseley is the second starter if his knee cooperates, but if it doesn’t this week, it’s either Josh Norman or Dre Kirkpatrick or Sunday’s subs, Embry Thomas and Deontay Johnson.
Are you going to beat all the writers who live in West Virginia? What is it like to travel again after last year? (@4GenSFFanfam)
Some of us have been carpooling south, with pit stops in Toledo (Go Mud Hens!) and Columbus (the old Ohio State haunt of sermons) by now. If we’re not practicing Wednesday at the Greenbrier in White Sulfur Springs, let’s say we become moonlight. Traveling is a wonderful and necessary part of the job, so we can report what we see and hear on the ground (and in the shadows, as was the case pregame when I caught wind of Ayuk’s decadence and preaching passive) .
Where to stay in Philly? (@bwell316)
Hotels near City Hall are in a centralized location, as are some near Independence Hall. Or just go from cheesesteak shop to cheesesteak shop (see: I love Jim, and Philly native Mike McGlinchy is loyal to Dalessandro).
