49ers Preseason Opener: Fan’s Guide to Levi’s Return to the Stadium

Santa Clara – Nearly 1,000 days have passed since the 49ers last played in front of home fans at Levi’s Stadium.

Now comes a new season, a new era and a new gratitude.

49ers will start quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, before rookie Trey Lance makes his debut on Saturday in a presidential opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kickoff is at 5:30 PM

“It’s going to be great to have the excitement and the fans back in the stadium,” Garopolo said on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday. “I’m a big supporter of it. Last year without them was weird. It’s not the same atmosphere, not the same energy.”

This 49ers-Chiefs matchup carries slightly less weight than their previous meeting: Super Bowl LIV that capped the 2019 season. Before that heartbreaking defeat was the Green Bay Packers’ NFC Championship Game loss 938 days earlier at Levi’s Stadium.

Back then, the COVID pandemic was just starting to go global, and as a byproduct related to the NFL, it led to the cancellation of last year’s exhibition games. The 49ers couldn’t host fans throughout the season, including their final month abroad in Arizona due to a Santa Clara County expulsion for COVID safety.

crowd capacity

The 49ers are allowed to fill every seat, but don’t expect the scene to be like the 72,211 who packed Levi’s Stadium for that NFC title match against the Packers. Precision games generally attract sparse crowds. However, it provides both the charm of Homecoming and Lance’s first performance for fans.

covid security

49ers do not require proof of vaccination but do require masks inside the home, such as in bathrooms and club spaces. Fans are encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID-19, as did 350,000 people at Levi’s Stadium earlier this year. Anyone feeling ill or having symptoms related to COVID has been asked not to attend.

go mobile

The 49ers are on all-in mobile ticketing, which goes for tickets and parking passes. In addition, Levi’s Stadium does not accept cash, although cash-to-card kiosks are located at the team store, United Club, and sections 117 and 308. In addition, it is recommended to download the 49ers app on mobile devices.

transit options

Parking lot open at 2 p.m. Light-rail service is unavailable due to the May mass shooting. Direct bus service will run every 10 minutes from the Milpitas Transit Center (near BART), and hourly with Caltrain connections to the Mountain View Transit Center starting at 2 p.m. and ending one hour after the game.
