Some animal species have both male and female sex organs that function together. Even the sex organs can change from female to male or vice versa. photo/treehugger
There are many reasons behind sex change, among them natural processes that provide reproductive flexibility to species or triggered by rising global temperatures. Here are 5 animals that can change their gender, summarized by SINDOnews from the TreeHugger page, Monday (15/8/2022).
Clownfish or clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites, born with one sex, but can change to the other sex if necessary. Clownfish live in groups where only two members are sexually mature, the larger male and the larger female. The rest are small, sexually immature males.
If something happens to a female fish during mating, the male partner turns into a female. He then chooses the next eldest male in the group as his new mate.
2. Banana Snail
Banana snails or banana slugs are worm-like mollusks that are unisexual together. This means that banana snails do not change gender, but instead use the male and female reproductive organs that they have together.
Although capable of self-fertilization, most banana snails prefer to find a mate. When it comes time to mate, the two snails cling to each other and engage in an exchange of sperm that fertilizes each snail’s egg.
