As a social media influencer and professional digital marketer, I have seen first-hand how businesses thrive by taking advantage of the trends in the marketing landscape. I have summarized five social media trends that I believe we will see in social media marketing this year.

TikTok is likely to continue to dominate the digital marketing landscape.

If you missed it last year, TikTok is taking social media by storm. TikTok has grown rapidly in popularity over the past two years and was reportedly the most downloaded application in 2020. I expect TikTok to catch up this year with years of video platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Why?

In 2020, TikTok had a whopping 65.9 million users in the United States and it would appear that growth has not stopped yet. As of January 2021, the application had 689 million worldwide active users. Consider starting your business on TikTok to meet your audiences where they are.

The marketing budget on small networks will increase.

As we try to keep 2020 and 2021 behind us, we still can not forget the kind of financial pressure we went through. However, you can consider branching out to small networks this year.

With the increase in expectations for marketing teams, I expect that there will be a significant increase in small network marketing this year than in the past few years. While noticing this, make sure you keep your budget flexible, efficient and measurable in case of any unexpected changes.

Buyers are increasingly turning to social media to buy items.

Over the past few years, social media channels online shopping have given a major interest and ways have emerged for buyers to complete the purchase without leaving the application. Now that each platform is training their efforts to improve the customers’ shopping experience, buyers are turning their heads to online shopping. Buy Stories, for example, is a feature on Instagram that allows users to select a product sticker and complete the purchase without leaving the app.

Customers on other platforms like TikTok enjoy a seamless purchasing process due to the platform’s top advertising formats and features. Brands on TikTok can now enhance their advertising content through an ad format called Spark Ads.

With the already available advertising and shopping features, it goes without saying that 2022 will see an increase in social media shopping. Businesses and brands can use the powerful tools on these platforms to empower their customers to make purchases wherever and whenever they want.

Shorter videos will increase in popularity.

Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels have become dramatically popular due to their video-focused nature. Short form videos are the secret force for TikTok’s growth as they are a unique way to captivate buyers as well as engage. Short form videos take less time to convey the necessary information about a product than any other format.

For example, video tweets are typically more engaging than regular text tweets in my experience. Through videos, brands can gain an in-depth connection with their online audience, highlight their products, as well as create awareness about any issues of interest. It is important to note that there is a tendency for brands to make soundless videos with written closed captions.

Market volume can increase significantly.

With the staggering increase in the number of internet users worldwide, social media marketers are not taking it for granted in 2022. No one wants to gamble with organic reach when paid advertising has proven a potential jackpot.

Social media ads are just ripe for taking and the rules of the game are at your fingertips. As a performance marketer, be prepared for a more difficult scramble for target audiences this year. You want to make sure you can identify your target audience before you plan to reach them. This year’s market volume may increase to impressive levels, which means it’s necessary to reach this audience before a competitor can reach it.
