6 airbag rules for Maruti Alto, 60,000 cars are expected to become more expensive

Maruti Suzuki’s all-new Alto will be launched during the festive season this year. But before the launch, information about this car is slowly coming out. According to a new report, the future of this entry-level car from Maruti may be uncertain due to the rule of 6 airbags. Not only that, but entry level variants of S-Presso, Celerio and WagonR can also be a problem. Recently, the government has made 6 airbags mandatory in cars. Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Varghese also expressed concern. The company is expected to launch the new Alto in October.

Airbags will push smaller cars
In an interview with the Economic Times, Varghese expressed concern about the future of small cars in India because of the new law. He revealed that he was not sure if the six airbags would fit in a small car. Because this hatchbag was not designed with 6 airbags in mind. Installing four additional airbags will significantly increase the price of the car and could be a big push for small car sales in the country.

The price of 4 airbags is more than 60,000 rupees
Currently, all vehicles must have two airbags. It has one for the driver and the other for the front passenger. The driver seat airbag rule was made mandatory in July 2019, while for the front passenger seat, the rule became effective January 1, 2022. Maruti is working to add four airbags to its entry-level model. This could increase the price of the car by about Rs 60,000.

Expensive deal of 6 airbags for 5 lakh cars
He said that an entry-level car would increase up to Rs 60,000, which is a big margin for any entry-level car. For this reason, the company may discontinue some variants of the model. The model with four airbags needs a lot of structural changes. Side airbags will have curtain airbags on the B-pillar behind the front seat. Cars that currently only come with 2 airbags need to make such structural changes. For this we have to make additional investment. Where 6 airbags are understood in a premium car. Vehicles costing less than Rs 5 lakh will go up in price. Currently, it costs 30 30,000 to add just 2 airbags to an entry level car
