8 people lose court case against Man City over abuse claims Nation World News

LONDON ( Associated Press) – Eight men on Monday lost a court case against Manchester City after they claimed they suffered abuse from a former youth football coach while being hired by the club.

The men, who are now in their 40s and 50s, claimed they were abused by Barry Bennell when they were playing youth football for teams that coached in north-west England from 1979–85. He was a scout for Benel City during that time and claimed that the club was liable for compensation for damages caused.

A judge of the London High Court ruled against him.

Mr Justice Johnson said: “The link between the abuse and Bennell’s relationship with (Man City) is insufficient to give rise to distorted liability.” “The relationship gave Bennell an opportunity to misbehave, but (Man City) did not entrust the welfare of the claimants to Bennell. It follows that it has not been shown that (Man City) was legal for Bennell’s acts of abuse.” is solemnly responsible.

Lawyer David McClenaghan, representing the eight men, said his client was “both shocked and disappointed” by the high court’s decision.

Bennell, who is serving a 34-year prison sentence for sexually abusing the boys, was the first witness called by lawyers representing the city at the trial. He testified through video link from jail.

City stated that Bennell was a local scout for the club in the mid-1970s, but was not its scout until 1979–85.

Bennell stated that he was “never” a City coach and that the junior teams he coached had no connection to City after 1978–1979. He said he had taken advantage of his past ties with the city to his advantage.

He also denied abusing four people.

Eight men were claiming damages for mental injuries. Six were also claiming damages for loss of potential earnings in football.

Bennell was convicted of sexually abusing boys on five separate occasions – four times in Britain and once in the United States.
