The case behind the attack on the Hindu village was simply that a Hindu person criticized the radical speech given by Maulana Mufti Mamunul, the joint secretary general of the organization.

A Hindu youth from Nawagaon had criticized Mamunul through a social media post. In his speech, Maulana had opposed the installation of a statue of Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman. As news spread about this social media post, a Muslim mob of thousands attacked the Hindu village with sharp weapons.

In this case, the leader of ‘Hifazat-e-Islam’ was engaged in inciting people since Tuesday night and protests were started from that time. He had alleged that communal peace could be disturbed by this social media post.

The police also arrested the Hindu youth the same night under pressure from the Islamic mob. But thousands of Muslims from Kashipur, Chandi and Nachipur came out in a rage.

Supporters of ‘Hifazat-e-Islam’ from nearby Muslim-majority areas came up with weapons. The attacks on the houses of Hindus started from 9 am on Wednesday. The houses of more than 80 Hindu families have been damaged in this incident.

Habibpur union chairman Vivekananda Majumdar Bakul said that the houses of many Hindus have been demolished. Local Hindus fled from there to escape the crowd. Hindu activist Raju Das of Bangladesh said that 88 houses and 8 family temples were also damaged during this period.

Not only were the houses damaged, but similar ones kept inside were also looted. ‘Hifazat-e-Islam’ is an association of many Mullah-clerics, which was established in 2010 to allegedly ‘save’ Bangladesh from the ruling Awami League.
