Many cars today have a built-in air purification system, which provides an instant reading of the Air Quality Index (AQI) inside and outside the car. However, in a recent test drive in Gulmarg, the ICA inside the car was found to be worse than outside. This is surprising as the Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 4MATIC SUV, the latest electric vehicle in Mercedes-Benz India’s lineup, does not contribute to pollution levels. This electric SUV, priced at Rs 1.4 crore, is fully imported from the United States. Mercedes-Benz has expanded its EV offering in India, but consumers still face a price shock when it comes to buying EVs.
Santosh Iyer, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz India, believes that EV buyers should think more altruistically. He said: “We have to really think about what kind of planet we want to leave for our children. If that means planning a little more than usual when we go on long trips, so be it. While EVs in India face questions about their adoption and infrastructure, EV management remains good. The weight of the battery case placed between the wheels gives them a low center of gravity, which makes them well balanced and easier for passengers.
The charging ecosystem for electric vehicles is growing rapidly in India. Chargers are installed on popular long-distance routes, including high-speed chargers that can charge vehicles like the EQE from zero to 80% in less than 30 minutes. While there are still gaps in infrastructure, with proper planning and research, it is possible to cover almost any major route in India with an electric vehicle.
The EQE 500 4MATIC SUV has impressive performance capabilities, with a top speed of 210 km/h and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. It has a range of 550 km on a full charge. However, the price of the EQE is a concern, as it is more expensive than similar electric SUVs from BMW and Audi. Mercedes-Benz hopes to attract luxury car buyers with purchase offers and a 10-year battery warranty.
In terms of design, the EQE features a new front instrument panel called “hyperscreen”, which is a large screen that extends from the driver’s instrument cluster to the passenger’s front panel. Combined with Mercedes-Benz’s interior ambient lighting, the EQE’s interior feels futuristic.
The combination of luxury and power in the Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 4MATIC SUV proves to be a solid offering, despite the price tag.
