A political party in the light of the world

At the most recent session of the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE), with a vote in favor of all councillors, the registration of eight new national political groups was approved. It seems to be another process. But upon careful review, one of the new groups in particular is striking because it is directly linked to the Church of the Light of the World. Its name: Mexican Humanism.

Its three promoters are federal representatives on the Morena bench: Fávio Castellanos Polanco, Hamlet García Almaguer and Emmanuel Reyes Carmona. The first two from Jalisco and the third from Guanajuato, but integrated into partisan activities for the 2024 elections in Jalisco. All three are identified as members of the Light of the World.

The general explanation is that this Christian church was founded in 1926 by Eusebio Joaquín Flores in Jalisco, thanks to political agreements with the then President Plutarco Elías Calles (the detonator of the so-called Cristero Revolution), one step away from representing . Political party. This would be the next step.

The General Law of Political Parties establishes in its Article 20 that “national political groups are forms of civil association that contribute to the development of democratic life and political culture, as well as to the formation of a better informed public opinion.” This is a dogmatization, since most new groups, like existing groups, adopt an agenda that links them to other parties or political leaders.

In fact, Humanismo Mexicano openly declares its action plan in favor of Morena and is currently a project headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. To obtain their registration, they met the requirements established in the Uniform Law: approximately 25,000 citizen signatures (5,000 are required) and they also held assemblies in at least 17 states of the republic.

Practically, what happens is the empowerment of the above three varnas. Castellanos Polanco, García Almaguer and Reyes Carmona already had a real presence with their allies in the national and state councils of Morena. But now by having the Humanismo Mexicano group, they reinforce themselves as firm competitors, especially in our state, of other internal political groups of the party.

Characters such as councilors Carlos Lomeli Bolaños and José María Martínez, who aspire to be candidates for governor, are now obliged to negotiate state and federal candidacies with Luz del Mundo’s representatives.

On his social networks, deputy Emmanuel Reyes immediately clarified that Humanismo Mexicano is “an organization that does not belong to any religious association” and that it is “composed of people with a plurality of views.” Furthermore, it emphasizes that its guiding principles include secularism, inclusiveness and diversity. Naturally, like any statement, this can be questioned. It will be verified in facts.

Like all believers in any church or religious association, the clergy of the Light of the World have the right to pursue their denomination, their political activity, and to hold public office. This is not disputed.

But given the recent events in the Chambers of Deputies and Senators, the increasing polarization and the fight for power that heralds the 2024 electoral process, it is important to note the growing political influence of actors belonging to this Church.

Members of Light of the World had reached out to the state in previous administrations and with different political parties, but generally. They are already established at the federal level and appear to be growing. His immediate future is linked to Morena.
