The popular Use of the Fair, which is held on weekends in Guaymallén, was the program of the Directorate of Natural Resources Renewal. Rural political actions in finding animals that were to be sold, some species were protected.
“The animal drivers from the directorate, working together with urban political personnel, took care of freeing the wild birds from the trade, which were hiding in different places of the runners. They were hiding in vehicles and boxes, among other things, which could make it difficult to detect them”, Sebastián Melchor, director of that portfolio, he explained.
The system enabled him to rescue specimens of species such as the bow tie, the golden aurichal, the Queen Maura, the duke and the tit, among others.
During the operation, the sale of fries is also identified. It is customary to catch wild birds, and their possession, transport, and sale are prohibited by law.
“It is very important that it is possible to verify the reduction of those things compared to the previous works of the property. Years ago, hundreds of specimens of wild fauna were rescued, while today the sale has decreased significantly”, explained the head of Fauna, Adrián Gorrindo.
The illegal wildlife trade is the fourth largest illegal trade in the world after the crimes of selling drugs, counterfeiting and human trafficking. More than 100 species of birds, 20 reptiles and 15 mammals in our country are affected by the wildlife trade. About 20 of them all fall into the threatened category, according to data from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) or Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina.
“The work that we have done together with the Ministry of Security, among other public and private actors, as far as citizen collaboration, emphasizes the awareness and responsibility of citizens when generating complaints and cooperating through the security authority notifying the application to act in this matter from this Fauna province” concluded Gorrindo.
Those who wish to provide information about wildlife specimens that have been damaged or reported as a cause of trafficking, hunting or illegal possession can do so through the complaint portal on the Ambiente website, www.ambiente.mendoza.gov.ar, or by writing to the fauna email address.
