SANTO DOMINGO.- President Luis Abinader reaffirmed this Monday afternoon that he will do everything necessary to protect the sovereignty and interests of the Dominican Republic.
He assured that due to the situation that will arise in Haiti and the canal they are building, the main thing is to maintain national security and not allow the Masacre River to be diverted.
He stated that the National Army is ready for any situation on the border. “In terms of security, the border has been strengthened and will be further strengthened.”
When referring to the construction carried out on the Haitian side, he indicated that it is not possible to have a short, medium and long-term plan with the Haitian authorities because there is no valid interlocutor.
He argued that currently the government of that country has many limitations in making decisions, since those who control a good part of the country are gangs.
Because of this, he assured that the Dominican authorities will not allow unruly people to do whatever they want on Dominican land.
DO NOT NEGOTIATE WITH BANDS
He reiterated that the Government will not negotiate with criminal gangs and warned Dominicans to avoid traveling to the neighboring country because of the dangerous situation in that country.
He indicated that when he approached the Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, he stated that, despite the disapproval of the canal, the Haitian government did not have the strength to stop its builders.
He said that the design of the Don Miguel dam as a definitive long-term solution started construction last year and is estimated to take 30 months, with a cost of 2.7 billion pesos.
He also stated that the design of Artibonito dam will be ready in the month of October.
The president offers his statements at “LA Semanal with the press”, which takes place every Monday starting at 4:30 pm at the National Palace.
