TURIN, Italy ( Associated Press) — Tammy Abraham scored twice to help Roma beat Torino 3-0 on Friday, securing a place in next season’s European tournaments.
The victory came just as the team from the capital is preparing to play the Europa Conference League final next week.
Both of Abraham’s goals came in the first half of Roma’s last game of the Serie A season. The England international took his tally to 26 in all competitions during a fantastic first campaign at the Italian club.
“I would have loved to score a hat-trick for my team, but the most important thing is that we won,” Abraham said. “We wanted to finish the season well. It’s been a long and hard campaign… Now we have a final to play and we’re all excited”.
Lorenzo Pellegrini converted a second penalty for Roma, 12 minutes from time.
It was Roma’s first Serie A win in over a month, and ensured that José Mourinho’s team finished in at least sixth place, thereby guaranteeing a place in the next Europa League, regardless what happens in the rest of the date.
In the Conference League final, the Giallorossi meet Feyenoord of the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Abraham’s goals came after blunders from Torino’s defense.
In the first, at 33 minutes, the locals gave the ball away in their field and Pellegrini found Abraham, who made a dribble, avoided a takedown and defined low.
Roma stretched the lead when defender Iván Rodríguez terribly missed a late pass. In an attempt by Erit Berisha to reach the ball, the goalkeeper fouled Abraham, who calmly converted the resulting penalty three minutes before half-time.
In the complement, when the substitute Nicolò Zaniolo was hit by Alessandro Buongiorno, a new penalty was turned into a goal by Pellegrini.
