Academy accused of lying to ask Will Smith to drop Oscars

Speculation continues as to what really happened at the Oscars on Sunday night, with the film academy accusing the film academy of lying when actor Will Smith was asked to leave the awards ceremony after attacking comedian Chris Rock.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Wednesday that the actor refused to leave Hollywood’s Dolby Theater after the comedian slapped him on stage. Responding to the question of why Smith was allowed to sit in front of an audience, the Academy also said that it was initiating disciplinary proceedings against him.

A Monday Nation World News report also squared off with that version of events.

“Academy leadership strongly considered removing Will Smith from last night’s broadcast following the incident,” a source told Nation World News. “There was an immediate discussion, but the Academy’s decision-makers were sitting at various places in the Dolby Theater and couldn’t converge to make a decision before winning Best Actor.”

Representatives for the Academy and Smith did not immediately return a request for comment.

Smith won the lead actor honor for his portrayal of tennis legend Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard Williams in “King Richard” shortly after the incident. He apologized, although not to The Rock, during his acceptance speech, and received a standing ovation.

The academy said disciplinary action against Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

When the comedian made a “GI Jane” joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who sports a shaved head after battling the effects of hair loss, Smith went on stage and hit the rock. Then he went back to his seat and started talking obscenely at The Rock.

Smith posted an apology to The Rock on Instagram the next day.
