Acid test after the upheaval: league start for the FC women

It is a first in the history of women’s football at 1. FC Köln: For the first time, the team is not starting a Bundesliga season as a promoted team. After staying up for the first time last year, however, the face of the team has changed significantly. The opening game against TSG Hoffenheim at the Franz Kremer Stadium is on Sunday (1 p.m.).

Last year, just before Christmas, the Cologne women could hardly be taken away from the league. Accordingly, the sporting director Nicole Bender and trainer Sascha Glass had plenty of time to start planning for the second year in a row in the Bundesliga.

The duo decided to give the team a new look. The upheaval was huge in the end: Eleven players left the team, including leading players and role models such as Rachel Rinast and, above all, captain Peggy Kuznik, who ended her career.

upheaval in the squad

A dozen newcomers came to Geißbockheim during the summer break, including the German national player Selina Cerci and the three Austrian national players and European Championship participants Jasmin Pal, Celina Degen and Sarah Puntigam. From now on, FC will primarily rely on young players who the club would like to develop further.

Above all, the young trio Sandra Walbeck (17 years old), Lilith Schmidt (16) and Emma Lattus (15) should be mentioned. Coach Sascha Glass has appointed experienced striker Mandy Islacker as the new captain, and the coach has appointed Sharon Beck as her deputy.

Cup draw after the first league win?

The dress rehearsal before the start of the league went well last weekend: the FC women warmed up for the new Bundesliga season with an 8-0 win in the DFB Cup in Elversberg. The draw for the round of 16 will take place after the final whistle of the home game on Sunday from 4 p.m. in the Sky studio and will be broadcast live.

Ideally, the Cologne women can follow the drawing of the lots after a sense of achievement. However, the duel against TSG Hoffenheim will be an acid test for the newly formed Cologne team, which will undoubtedly find themselves in the role of outsiders. But together with the loud support from the ranks, a surprise should succeed right at the first attempt.

The “1. Frauenfanclub Rut Wiess” would like to do its part. The group was founded during the summer break, already accompanied the team to Elversberg and will celebrate its premiere in a mandatory home game of the Bundesliga team on Sunday.
