Acosta scored; Cincinnati overwhelms Montreal and is the conference leader

A Joel Waterman own goal opened the scoring after two minutes and a goal from Argentina’s Luciano Acosta extended it as Cincinnati beat Montreal 3-0 on Wednesday.

Acosta made it three goals in the MLS campaign, scoring after 26 minutes.

Brandon Vazquez also reached three goals this season, thanks to an assist from Obinna Nbodo, beating the penalty on 65.

Atop the Eastern Conference, Cincinnati reached 27 points, three more than the New England Revolution. They broke a three-game losing streak against Montreal and tied the all-time record of three wins per side.

Cincinnati is the sixth team in league history to win their first seven home games. The Philadelphia Union had nine spins in 2020.

Montreal’s six-game winning streak was snapped at the championships – its longest since joining the league in 2012. It is 12th in the East with 15 points.

Cincinnati will host the Columbus Crew on Saturday. On the same day, Montreal would travel to the stadium of the New York Red Bulls, who played out a 0–0 draw against Toronto that day.

Elsewhere, Argentina’s Thiago Almada scored in the first half to help Atlanta United beat Colorado Rapids 4–0. Dallas defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 2–1 on goals in each half by Colombian-American Jesús Ferreira.

Lucas Zelarayan of Argentina scored in the Columbus Crew’s 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

In addition, New York City FC drew 1–1 with Orlando City FC, as did Sporting Kansas City with Los Angeles FC; Charlotte beat Chicago Fire 2–1; Austin also defeated the Seattle Sounders, 2–1; Nashville defeated Inter Miami by the same scoreline, and Minnesota United defeated the Houston Dynamo 1–0.

DC United and the Union were tied 0–0, as were Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake.
