Clubs will be allowed to delay the release of players in African Cup of Nations squads until the tournament resumes after the African Football Confederation accepted a request from domestic leagues.

FIFA’s rules this Monday released players, allowing them to disappear from games in European competitions, such as the Premier League which play over the Christmas and New Year period, and throughout the African Cup.

Clubs can now keep players for matches until January 3. The 24-Nation African Cup begins on 9 January at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, with the final on 6 February.

FIFA Deputy Secretary-General Mattias Grafström reaffirmed his “commitment to solidarity” for the World League Forum and European leagues in a letter seen by The Associated Press on Saturday.
