After America’s Abortion Decision: From Green Day to Billy Joe Armstrong Wants to Move to Great Britain

Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong wants to give up his American citizenship and move to Britain and become a British citizen. The 50-year-old’s reaction stemmed from the US Supreme Court’s decision to end abortion protections.

“I relinquish my citizenship”

Grammy Award winner and ‘American Idiot’ Green Day singer announced during his concert in London on Friday (June 24, 2022) that he wants to relocate to the UK. He declared “F**k America”, saying he would give up his citizenship after the Supreme Court overturned federal abortion protections following Roe v. Wade.

“Fuck America, I’m giving up my citizenship. I’m coming here, damn it,” Armstrong explained. “There is too much foolishness in the world to go back to this pathetic country.”

“Oh, I’m not kidding,” Armstrong said. “You’ll see a lot more of me in the next few days.”

Armstrong was even more outspoken during a Green Day concert a day later. Before Armstrong joined in the song “American Idiot,” he shouted, “F*** the Supreme Court.”

Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar also commented

Other artists gave statements on the decision of the Supreme Court. Taylor Swift said she was “absolutely shocked” by the decision. Billie Eilish called it a “really, really dark day for women”. In Glastonbury, Phoebe Bridgers chants “F*** Supreme Court!” Shout out and Olivia Rodrigo and Lily Allen dedicated their performance of “Fuck you” to the conservative judges. Also during his performance at Glastonbury on June 26, 2022, Kendrick Lamar chanted the following lines: “Good luck for women’s rights; They judge you, they judge Christ.”

Music as a Political Platform

Armstrong has in the past used his music as a platform to express himself politically. In the song “American Idiot” from 2004, he criticized the media landscape in the United States.

An American doesn’t want to be an idiot!
Do not want country under new media
And can you hear the hysteria?
The unconscious mind fucks America! ,

In addition, Green Day 2016 criticized the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. During their performance at the 2016 American Music Awards, the band sang – “No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA.”
