Alabama Group to Debut at Macy’s | AP News

TUSKALUSA, AL (AP) – The University of Alabama Million Dollar Group will perform for the first time at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that the band will play “Santa Claus Goes to Town” and accompany Santa Claus in his fleet as he concludes the parade, The Tuscaloosa News reported.

The Morning Parade will air on NBC and its streaming service Peacock.

The Million Dollar Band was one of two selected student groups. This will be Macy’s first parade for the band, founded in 1912.

According to the Tuscaloosa newspaper, the organizers of the parade selected UA from more than 100 applicants based on sound and appearance, as well as biographies and letters of recommendation.

Preparations for the parade began about six weeks ago when the Macy’s Performance Chart was marked out at Butler Field in Tuscaloosa. The classroom is named after the director of the Million Dollar Band from 1935 to 1968, Colonel Carlton K. Butler.

Additional efforts were required to adapt to the city streets and accommodate Santa’s front door, the group said. The parade route runs from Central Park to Macy’s on 34th Street.

“The software we use to write our exercises, the movements we do, is a plugin for Macy’s,” said Kenneth Ozzello, director of the Million Dollar Band since 2002. “The road is there with a grid; you can see the store behind it. This made it easy to adapt from the football field to Manhattan. “

The parade ends near Seventh Avenue, “so it’s wider than most, but still getting 400 people to this place isn’t easy,” Ozzello added. “But we had enough time.”
