NEW YORK – A few hours before the premiere of the HBO documentary “Jagged” at the Toronto International Film Festival on Tuesday, Alanis Morrison criticized the film as “reductive” and “useful” about her life.
Morrison took part in a film directed by Alison Cleman, sat down for a long interview. But in a statement issued by his promoter, the Canadian musician said he would not support the film in the name of his 1995 breakthrough album “Jagged Little Peel”.
“I agreed to participate in a part about the 25th anniversary celebrations of‘ Jagged Little Pill, ’and interviewed at a very weak time (when I was in my third postpartum depression during the lockdown),” Moriset writes. “I was tempted by a false sense of security and their valuable agenda became clear as soon as I saw the first cut of the film. It was only then that I realized that our outlook was actually painfully detached. I was not willing to tell this story. ”
Morriset did not specify its problems with “Jagged”, which will premiere November 19 on HBO. But one of its most sensitive elements is when Morriset discusses sexual assault at the age of 15, calling it statutory rape. The Washington Post had previously reported on that part of the film.
“It took me a few years in my therapy to even admit that there was any kind of abuse on my part,” Morrisett said in the film. “I’ll always say I agree, and then I’ll be reminded ‘Hey, you’re 15, you don’t agree at 15.’ Now I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, they’re all pedophiles. It’s all statutory rape.’
The age of consent in Canada has been 16 years since 2008. If the age difference is not more than five years, 14 or 15 year olds may consent to unprotected sexual activity. Prior to 2008, the age of consent was 1 14.
Cleman’s representatives did not immediately return requests for comment Tuesday. In an interview with Deadline Hollywood, released Tuesday, Cleman, whose films include “I Wayway: Never Sorry” and Steve Bannon’s documentary “Brink”, lamented that Morrisett would not be there for the premiere.
“I think it’s really hard to watch movies made about yourself,” Cleman said. “I think he was incredibly brave and the reaction when he saw it was that it really was – he could feel all the work, all the subtlety in it. And again, he gave her a lot of time and a lot of effort to do it and I think the movie really speaks for itself.
Morrison is currently on tour and will perform in Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday.
“I chose not to attend any events in the vicinity of this movie for two reasons: One is that I am on tour at the moment. The other is that, unlike many ‘stories’ and unapproved biographies over the years, they include impressions and truths that are simply not true, “Moriset said.” For – I will not ultimately support anyone else’s introductory story that cannot be understood or told too subtly to them. “
