Alberto San Juan, accompanied by a brilliant quartet of musicians, manages to bring Federico’s visionary verses to life in ‘Lorca en Nueva York’, reciting them “almost as if he were telling them to a friend in a club at dawn”. Was toasting with pure wine », as critic Marcos Ordóñez said. The play comes to Burgidum next Friday, May 26 (8:30 pm) as part of the Castilla y León Theater Network program. Tickets (10 and 8 Euro) are for sale.
Lorca traveled to New York in June 1929 and remained there until March 1930. In the same year he presented his book Poeta en Nueva York at the Residencia de Senoritas in Madrid and recounts his impressions after a year of living in that city, where he saw the Crack of 29. Lorca referred to capitalism that day as “a brutal economic system whose throats will soon have to be slit.”
The show, performed by Alberto San Juan and his band, reproduces the text that Federico recited in that meeting with the public almost a century ago and which perfectly preserves the current light. New York’s poems and prose are full of mystical images, but also clear visions that depict our current reality in an almost journalistic way. Describing the financial market on Wall Street, he says, “Gold comes from all parts of the earth and with it comes death.” Lorca speaks to the mystery, the transcendent, the sacred, deeply touching our own mystery to which there is no answer. And he also speaks with absolute clarity. Federico has an amazing ability to see and tell what happens.
Critic Marcos Ordóñez summarized the show thusly: «San Juan appears in a black chansonnier suit, and makes Diaphanous the complex, ethereal verses of Poeta en Nueva York, almost as if she were to hear them from a friend in a club at dawn. toasting with pure wine (…) At the end, the audience stands up and applauds as if they are clapping. I tell him: “This jewel should be seen in schools, drama classes … It should be mandatory.”
On stage, San Juan is supported by Claudio de Casas on guitar, Pablo Navarro on double bass, Gabriel Marijuana on drums and Miguel Malla on sax and keyboards. The result is “a complete journey that this work proposes, with a simplicity that the viewer falls in love with and that allows them to be carried away by the senses.”
