Alcantara shines again; Marlins beat Angels

MIAMI ( Associated Press) – Sandy Alcantara dominated eight innings for a second straight win as the Miami Marlins beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Alcantara (9–3) scored a pair of hits – a single by Luis Rengifo in the fifth inning and a drop off Mike Trout in the seventh – as the Marlins secured their sixth victory.

The Dominican right-handed batsman completed his eleventh consecutive innings in at least seven innings. He killed 10 opponents and improved his ERA to 1.82.

“I try to be consistent, go to the mound every five days and fight for my team,” Alcantara said. “Whenever I can play seven or eight innings, I feel satisfied. You have to be healthy to have a long career.”

Tanner Scott earned his 10th save after dropping Taylor Ward’s sacrificial fly and retiring Jared Walsh to center field for the final out.

Garrett Cooper and Brian De La Cruz made home for Miami. Joy Wendell had some hit movies.

Shohei Ohtani, last season’s AL MVP, went 0-for-three with a walk. The Japanese, who turned 28 on Tuesday, reached a fielder’s pick in the seventh inning and made his ninth steal of the season.

“We react and fight. We’re doing everything we can,” said Los Angeles interim manager Bill Haselman.

The defeat went to Noah Syndergaard (5-7).

For the Angels, Dominican Jonathan Willer 4-0. Venezuela Rengifo 3-1.

For the Marlins, Venezuela’s Jess Aguilar 4-0, Avicel García 2-0, Miguel Rojas 3-0. Dominican Jesus Sanchez 3-2, de la Cruz 3-1 with an RBI.
