Alec Baldwin surrenders mobile phone as part of rust shooting investigation

Alec Baldwin turned in his mobile phone nearly a month after New Mexico authorities issued a search warrant for the device as part of an investigation into the fatal shooting on the set of Rust in October.

The Santa Fe District Attorney’s office told ABC News on Friday that Baldwin’s phone was in their possession a day after the incident. Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office made a statement saying the phone hasn’t been flipped yet.

Authorities have said they want to review text messages sent from the phone as part of an investigation into the on-set shooting and also look for photos and videos, emails, internet browsing history, GPS data and more, according to the warrant.

In an Instagram post last weekend, Baldwin claimed that the delay in handing over the phone was because he wanted to ensure that his private communications are protected.

“Any suggestion that I am not following requests or orders or search warrants on my phone is bullshit. It’s a lie,” Baldwin said in the nearly five-minute clip.

“This is a process that takes time. They must specify exactly what they want. They just can’t go through your phone and take your photos or love letters to your wife or whatever,” Baldwin said. “But, of course, we will 1000% comply with all this. We’re all right with that, you know.”

Baldwin fired a firearm on the set of the film, killing cinematographer Galina Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

The actor told ABC News correspondent George Stephanopoulos last month that he “has no idea” how a live bullet hit the set.

“I’m holding the gun where she told me to keep it, where it should be pointing right under her armpit,” Baldwin said during the interview. “I take the gun and start cocking the trigger, I’m not going to pull the trigger. I release the trigger of the gun and the gun fires.”

Investigators described “some smugness” in the way guns were handled on set, but said it was too early to decide if charges would be filed.
