October 1 (WNN) — A Texas judge has ruled that Infowars owner and host Alex Jones is responsible for damages caused to the families of two children killed in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Travis County Judge Maya Guerra Gamble ruled Thursday in favor of the parents who sued Jones for defamation after finding that the right-wing radio host failed to present evidence behind his claims that the genocide. was a hoax. The judge also found that Jones “willfully disobeyed” court orders to hand over the evidence, NBC News reported.
“The Court found that the defendants’ failure to comply … [their] Persistent pattern of search misuse in similar cases pending before this court,” Gamble wrote.
“The Court found that the defendants’ search conduct in this case is the result of openly bad faith and blatant disregard for search responsibility under the Rules.”
Mark Bankston, attorney for both families, issued a statement to CNN welcoming the decision.
“Mr. Jones was given ample opportunity to take these cases seriously and abide by the rule of law. He chose not to do so and now has to face the consequences of that decision.”
Jones’ attorney, Brad Reeves, issued a statement on the InfoWars website calling the ruling “astonishing.”
“It does not take any account of the thousands of documents produced by the defendants, the hours spent for settlement and the various affidavits filed in these cases,” he said.
“There is nothing less than a fundamental right to speak freely in these matters. It is no exaggeration to say that the First Amendment was crucified today.”
The families who filed the lawsuit in 2018 sought $1 million from Jones and his companies. He said Jones called the parents of the children killed “crisis actors” and that one Florida resident agreed so strongly with Jones’ claim that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax that he made death threats against the victim’s family.
On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza killed his mother, 20 first graders and six school workers at Sandy Hook Elementary before killing himself.
