Alicia Keys: Becoming a mom helped me find my power

Alicia Keys “found her power” when she became a mother.

The 40-year-old singer has sons Egypt, 11, and Genesis, six, with her husband Swizz Beatz, and has said that becoming a mother helped her find “strength” for herself as well as her children.

She explained: “It’s definitely different. I remember for me; It was like I found my power. I didn’t have the strength to say no to people because I wasn’t important enough to me, but that kid was so important to me that I found my power. “

And Alicia also said that she is “more considerate” now when it comes to her well-being, as she no longer spends all night in the studio without a break to go home and see her family.

Speaking to Kehlani for Rolling Stone magazine’s Musicians on Musicians package, he said: “I know what you mean about being more discreet. I used to burn the studio to the ground. Until I was on the floor I’d keep digging for that thing until then. I couldn’t figure it out, and it’s seven in the morning and I’m finally on my way home. Now, I’m at a place where I’m exactly the same, ‘Well, that’s not happening.’ “

Kehlani, 26, then revealed welcoming two-year-old daughter Adya — whom she holds with her guitarist, Jawon Young-White — taught her “patience” and developed her career as a musician.

The ‘I Like Dat’ singer – who came out as a lesbian earlier this year and uses the pronoun he/they – said: “My baby gave me patience and a backbone and all these things… So then I’m experiencing relationships, and I’m hella patient now and I have a spine, and then the songs aren’t like, ‘Pick me up, I’m dying without you’ songs because it’s all back Goes to how my child made me.

“I think parenthood in general alters feelings, and emotion is a direct construct.”
