Danville, Pa. (AP) — The last of the monkeys that survived the crash of a truck carrying a trailer load of 100 animals were accounted for late Saturday, a day after the pickup collided with a dump truck on a Pennsylvania highway Was. , officials said.

Pennsylvania State Police said several monkeys had fled after Friday’s collision. But only one had been detected as of Saturday morning, prompting the Pennsylvania Sports Commission and other agencies to launch a search amid cold weather.

Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an email Saturday evening that all 100 cynomolgus macaque monkeys had been counted. Three died after euthanasia.

The email did not elaborate on why all three were euthanized or how they were all accounted for. But Nordlund said those were done humanely according to guidelines from the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Police said the shipment of monkeys was on its way to a CDC-approved quarantine facility from Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, after arriving Friday morning at New York’s Kennedy Airport. The Atlanta-based CDC said the agency is providing “technical assistance” to state police in Pennsylvania.

Trooper Andrea Pelachik told Sunbury’s Daily Item newspaper that the collision occurred Friday on a state highway near an Interstate 80 exit in Montaur County, Pennsylvania.

The location of the quarantine facility and the type of research the monkeys were explicitly assigned to was not clear, but cynomolgus monkeys are often used in medical studies. A 2015 paper posted on the website of the National Center for Biotechnology Information referred to them as the most widely used primates in preclinical toxicology studies.

Earlier, the police had earlier urged people not to seek or capture any monkey, with soldiers tweeting: “Whoever sees or traces a monkey, do not approach the monkey, catch it.” are not asked to attempt or come into contact with him. Please call 911 immediately.”

Trooper Lauren Leisher said the concern was “due to not having a pet and being in uncharted territory. It’s hard to say how they would react to a person approaching them.”

Lesher said state police have secured the scene for the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the CDC.

According to the accident report of the state police, there was no damage to the drivers of the trucks and a passenger suspected of having minor injuries was taken to a medical center for treatment.

An accident witness, Michelle Fallon, told Bloomsburg’s Press Enterprise newspaper that she had spoken to the pickup driver and a passenger after the accident. The driver appeared to be distracted, and the passenger thought he might have suffered a leg injury, he said.

On Friday, when the soldiers searched for the monkeys, rifles, the crates were scattered on the road. Bloomsburg’s Press Enterprise newspaper reported that firefighters in Valley Township used thermal imaging to locate the animals and that a helicopter also helped.

The pickup was heading west on I-80 when it got off at the Danville exit and then immediately tried to turn back, turning into the other lane, the newspaper reported.

Fallon told Press Enterprise that she was in the back of the pickup when the dump truck hit the passenger side, tearing the front panel of the trailer and a dozen crates out.

Fallon said he and another motorist who stopped to help were standing near the scene when the other driver said he thought he had seen a cat running across the street.

Fallon peeped into a crate and saw a small monkey looking at him, he told the newspaper.

“They are monkeys,” he said to the other motorist.
