It’s been a year since we stopped. But the effects of those long months are still alive. Spanish university students present a high level of emotional and academic problems after the coronavirus pandemic, according to the questions and demands of the psychological treatment of University students in the Post-pandemic period carried out by researchers from the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Oviedo. along with 35 other Spanish universities.
Fundamental: prevention
One of the main conclusions of the work is that it is necessary to establish policies designed to prevent and treat psychological problems among university students, since they affect not only their quality of life, but also their academic performance, which can be a circumstance. end in abandoned studies.
The study was carried out between March and April 2022 and included the participation of 5,221 undergraduate and postgraduate students of Spanish public and private universities, with incomes in classrooms after the withdrawal of social measures of removal.

Anxiety is presented as a transversal problem among university students with the same severity and frequency in all undergraduate and postgraduate training. However, there are statistically significant differences between Arts and Humanities students, who have higher scores compared to other branches.
The consumption of addictive substances by other researchers is a response from university students to calm the anxious symptoms from the pandemic. 60% claim that the pandemic has not changed their consumption habits. 20% state that increased this consumption and another 20% state that decreased it.
Sadness, the second perversity
Depression is the second most common mental disorder. More than 40% of the Spanish university students participating in the study had current depressive symptoms. 21% of students had a score indicative of clinical depression; 21.1% other, probable cause; and 57.8% do not report any symptoms.
Arts and Humanities students again show more severe depressive symptoms. According to the general trend, it has also been observed that students of Health Sciences show the greatest psychological well-being compared to other branches.
When I study the costs
60% of first-year students in Spanish universities have few problems in the correct study method. In the remaining grade levels, up to 40% reported the same level of difficulty and another 20% recognized moderate difficulty.
Statistically significantly, masters and doctoral students have fewer problems. These problems are transversal to the sciences, without discrimination between them. 53.1% of the examinees would like to receive psychological help for difficulties with the study method.
“What are we doing wrong?”
The data from the study force us to ask some questions. “As a society, we have to ask ourselves, what are we doing wrong?”, asks the clinical psychologist Silvia Lava in the educational site Éxito. In the opinion of this expert, the situation of mental health in Spain has changed, but they do not have the resources to control it. “After the pandemic, 25% of students suffer from emotional health disorders, one in four people,” he said.
Young university students face problems with their day to day. How can it be paid? “We must provide young people with time for management plans, technical studies and even emotional support. Some universities, indeed, have employed psychology centers that can help,” he says.
The company shows that the level of demand for university students and future expectations does not support their emotional health. For the psychologist says: “To work hard kills university students so that they can achieve their expectations.” Those soft skills are empathy, creativity, communication skills, semwork, leadership skills, the ability to adapt and resilience, the ability not to throw in the towel or remove it if we remove it, when disenchantment appears.
