LAS VEGAS ( Associated Press) – Brittany Altomare defeated top seed Minzy Lee 2 and 1 in hot conditions at Shadow Creek in a Bank of Hope LPGA match-play on Thursday in the second round of group play.
Three down after five holes and then seven in the triple digit heat, Altomare cut his losses short on a turn with a birdie at No.8 and an eagle on par-5 ninth. The American also leveled in par-4 12th and took a 2-up lead with birdies on 13 and 14. He equalized the next three to end the match.
The winners of 16 four-player groups will advance to singles elimination at the conclusion of round-robin play on Friday. On Friday, Altomare (1-1) will face Youngin Chun (0-2) and Lee (1-1) will face Caroline Mason (2-0). Mason defeated Chun 2 and 1.
Lee is looking to win for the second time in a row after taking the Founders Cup in New Jersey on May 15. The Australian ranks fourth in the world.
Jodi Ewart Schadoff followed up with a 3 and 2 decision over So Yeon Ryu (0–2) after a 6 and 5 victory over defending champion Eli Ewing. Ewing defeated Jasmine Suwannapura (1-1) 3 and 2.
Shadowoff is playing Shadow Creek for the first time.
Madeleine Sagstrom, Hye-Jin Choi, Eun-hee Ji, Carlota Siganda, Tiffany Chan, Jenny Shin, Lilia Wu, Gabi Lopez and Paula Reto were also 2–0 up.
Sagstrom beat Wei-Ling Soo by 1, Choi beat Aditi Ashok 3 and 2, Ji beat Las Vegas resident Danielle Kang 2 and 1, Siganda beat Pauline Roussin-Bouchard 3 and 1, Reto beat Yelimi Noh 3 and 2, Chan beat Alison Lee 4 and 3, Shin beat Hannah Green 5 and 3, Wu beat Aria Jutanugarn 2 and 1, and Lopez topped Cheyenne Knight 3 and 2. Kang leads 0-2.
Chevron Championship winner Jennifer Kupcho improved to 1-1, passing Lauren Stephenson 3 and 2.
