HOUSTON ( Associated Press) — Jordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer and Kyle Tucker had three RBIs to guide the Houston Astros to an 8-2 win over the New York Mets in an interleague matchup between the two top teams at the Majors on Tuesday night.
The Astros are only behind the Yankees in the American League, and the Mets top the National League standings.
Jose Altuve and Jose Siri added single home runs for Houston in the first meeting between the teams since the Astros entered a three-game series in September 2017.
It was the first of nine straight games for the Astros against the Mets and Yankees, with both New York teams on deck during their road trip following Wednesday’s series finale. Following that visit, Houston hosts the Yankees for a game on June 30 to help finish a series due to the lockdown.
Houston took a 3-0 lead after Altuve and Alvarez, who missed Sunday’s game with a hand injury, added Trevor Williams in the third inning. Tucker’s three-run double exposed a four-run fifth that extended the lead to 7-0.
Jose Urquidi (6-3) conceded four hits and one run in six innings to seal the win. Urquidi, who scored one run, threw a career-high 104 pitches.
Pete Alonso hit his NL-leading 20th home run in sixth and Eduardo Escobar added a single shot in seventh for the Mets, who were 0 for 6 with the runners in the scoring position.
Williams (1-4) scored four hits and three runs in four innings in his sixth start of the season and for the first time since June 5.
One of the third was when Altuve launched his homer to make it 1-0 in the second row of left field seats. Williams ran Alex Bregman before Alvarez added a shot to the right to lead 3–0.
Alonso and Mark Canha hit consecutive singles with one in the fourth before the Mets loaded the bases when Luis Guillorme reached an error by first baseman Yuli Guriel. Urquidy then settled in, ousting Escobar and JD Davis to avoid the jam.
There were two outs in the fifth when Chesson Shreve ran Alvarez to load the bases. Tucker lined up a double to right-center to clear bases and make it 6-0.
Tucker finished third, before Shreve walked Gurrill. Mauricio Dubon singled out Tucker to score the goal and put Houston 7-0 ahead.
Siri dropped 0-for-10 on the train tracks above left field in the eighth inning with a single homer.
