Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely

Amazon will allow many technical and corporate employees to continue to work remotely indefinitely, provided they can get to the office when needed, according to a blog post published on Monday.

The new policy differs from Amazon’s previous expectations that the majority of employees will be required to be in the office at least three days a week after the offices reopen in January.

A message signed Monday by Amazon CEO Andy Yassi explains that Amazon directors – at Amazon, a title denoting a leader who oversees multiple teams – will have the discretion to allow the teams under their control to remain remote.

“We expect there will be groups that will continue to work mostly remotely, others will work in some combination remotely and in the office, and still others will decide that customers are best served if the team will work primarily in the office,” wrote Yassi. “We are deliberately not specifying how many days or which days — directors should determine with their senior leaders and teams.”

In a blog post, Yassi thanked Amazon employees who were unable to work remotely during the pandemic “for their enthusiasm. This is highly appreciated. ” These employees include the vast majority of the more than 1 million Amazon employees worldwide who work in Execution and Transportation, the AWS Data Center and Retail Individuals.

Amazon’s renewal of its back-to-work policy follows similar steps from other tech giants. Microsoft announced last month that it was postponing the opening of its offices indefinitely; Google said it expects roughly 20% of its employees will continue to work from home on a full-time basis.

Amazon’s new stance on telecommuting is likely to heighten anxiety among South Lake Union business owners, who expected traffic and revenues to rise after Amazon fully reopens its neighborhood offices next year.
