America beat Colombia 3-0 in women’s friendly match

COMMERCE CITY, Colo ( Associated Press) – Sophia Smith made a brace in the second half as the United States women’s team extended their unbeaten streak to 68 games as they beat Colombia 3-0 on Saturday.

Taylor Korniak, who made his national team debut, scored the second goal late.

On Tuesday the teams will meet again in Sandy, Utah. The United States is gearing up for next month’s CONCACAF W Championship, a World Cup qualifying tournament, in Monterey, Mexico.

The US team has been crowned in the last two World Cups.

Smith scored from Rose Lavelle in the 54th minute. He scored the second goal on the score of 60.

Smith, who plays for the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Football League, has scored six goals for the national team.

Goalkeeper Catalina Perez covered two penalties. She blocked Lindsay Horan’s effort late in the first half and saved LaValle’s shot in the 70th.

Selected Americans received a lot of attention before the prospect of mass protests in court following a decision by the nation’s Supreme Court that opened the door for states to ban abortions.

Instead, the team issued a statement ahead of the game.

“As the women’s team represents the United States in court in Colorado, this opportunity serves as a reminder of the rights and freedoms that women and their allies fought for, earned and deserved,” the team said.

“The Supreme Court’s decision of June 24, goes against the promised liberties as a nation and as individuals. US Soccer will stand up for human rights at every opportunity.”

Megan Rapinoe gave an emotional speech on Friday in which she called for upholding women’s right to decide on pregnancy following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday. Alex Morgan came in for Ashley Hatch at halftime and Rapinoe entered the game to applause with 15 minutes to go.

Colombia hopes to get one of the CONMEBOL tickets for the 2023 World Cup which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand. She is ranked 28th in the world but did not qualify for the 2019 World Cup.
