America is considering a change in its warships

PORTLAND, Maine ( Associated Press) — The U.S. Navy, which once favored smaller, faster warships to chase pirates, has turned increasingly to Russia and China, turning back many of the recently built ships can be taken.

The Navy is looking to roll out nine Freedom-class littoral combat corvettes, warships that cost about $4.5 billion to build.

The Navy claims in its budget proposal that the initiative will free up $50 million annually per ship for other priorities, but it will also reduce the size of the fleet – which has already surpassed China in absolute numbers – by some Such that the members of Congress can protest.

Administrator Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, defended the proposal, which emphasized long-range weapons and modern warships while removing other ships to deal with existing threats.

“We need a force that is ready, capable and lethal, we need a force that is bigger, but less ready, less lethal and less capable,” he said Monday at the Navy League Sea-Air-Space Symposium. Ho.” Maryland.

Overall, the Navy wants to retire 24 ships, including five cruisers and a pair of Los Angeles-class submarines, as part of the cost reduction required to maintain the existing fleet and build modern warships. Those cuts exceed the construction of the nine ships proposed.

Most of them are older ships, while the Coastal Combat Ships are relatively recent. The eldest of them is 10 years old.

The Littoral Combat Ship program was announced following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The ships have speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) to chase pirates, and are highly maneuverable even in shallow water thanks to the fact that they use steerable water jets instead of propellers.
