Amtrak train derails, tips over after collision in Missouri

An Amtrak passenger train derailed this afternoon in rural Mendon, Missouri.

The accident happened around 12:42 pm today, and the force of the impact derailed and overturned eight train cars and two locomotives.

There are reports of dozens of injuries and several casualties, with one confirmed death so far.

Amtrak said in a statement this afternoon that there were approximately 243 passengers and 12 crew members on board the Southwest Main Train 4 train. The train was heading east and traveled a route from Los Angeles to Chicago.

Passengers who were able climbed out of the windows to avoid the wreckage and some took pictures and videos of the aftermath and shared them on social media.

Mendon, a small town with a population of just 163, swung into action, setting up an area at the nearby Northwestern High School to provide shelter to shock and injured commuters.
