The Third Chamber of the Supreme Court issued a ruling against online betting providers and banned access to them because they were considered illegal. One of the most affected areas is football, as most clubs and the National Professional Football Association (ANFP) itself are sponsored by them.
Specifically, the highest court responded to a protective complaint filed by Polla Chilena in 2022 against the telecommunications company Mundo Pacífico. “The defendant may not broadcast or advertise games of chance unless it demonstrates legal and official authorization and must therefore immediately block all websites requested by the complainant in these proceedings,” the judgment said.
The ANFP said that “after the verdict we will have to look for a sponsor”. It is recalled that the governing body of national football had announced legal action against the Ministry of Justice’s mandate to terminate these contracts. But now they have changed their minds.
As stated The second, The ANFP board indicated that meetings will be held with the legal department to analyze the roads, but stressed: “If this decision says they are illegal, they are illegal.”
“The difference with the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice is that we have said that they do not have the authority to define illegality,” they claimed in the media.
Regarding the contract with Bettson (sponsor of the National Championship) and its termination, which refers to 8 million dollars and a term of three years, they noted that “this should not cause an economic problem in the ANFP, since the contract is linear, i.e. The money is delivered periodically, nothing is paid in advance. We have to find another sponsor.
Societies
Most national football clubs have an online betting company as their main sponsor, with the exception of Unión Española, the only team not sponsored by one of these companies.
The ruling means a complex future scenario as it represents a great source of income for these clubs. So far no one has commented on the issue.
