“Annie Live”: how Nicole Scherzinger directed We Have Annie

On Annie Live! There’s a moment on NBC. in which Grace Farrell, played by Nicole Scherzinger, receives a short message from her boss: “We have Annie.”

It’s just three words, but it sends her to The corkscrew of disbelief and delight is the feeling that Scherzinger expresses as he glides over furniture, sprawls on a piano bench and chants upside down. The ambitious musical dance number, premiered on Thursday’s telecast, is both a tribute to the late Broadway legend and a milestone for the actress who succeeded her.

An NBC Music Special retells the beloved story of a brave Depression orphan (Selina Smith) who was adopted by a billionaire. Particular efforts have been made to include the 1982 film song We Got Annie, which has not yet been featured on stage versions of the show. Film actors Broadway legend Anne Reinking as personal assistant to Warbucks Grace, and her mansion-wide celebration of Annie’s upcoming arrival has since become a cult moment in the movie musical.

“She had a great sense of style and sophistication,” says Annie Live! choreographer Sergio Trujillo of Reinking, who was the dancer in the 1999 stage tribute to Fosse, who co-wrote and co-directed Reinking. “This number is by no means a copy of the film, but it was in my heart when I created it. I wanted to pay tribute to her with beautiful and elegant movements. ”

Scherzinger, who studied theater in college and spearheaded the revival of Cats in the West End, knew she was in big trouble. “No one has sung this song since Ann’s time,” she says of Reinking, who died last year. “I really want her to be proud. So I said to Sergio: “I want it to be something really special. I want to go beyond and really challenge. ”

In the jazz act, Scherzinger and more than a dozen performers dance among flower arches, stairs and sofas. Trujillo reconfigured one of her many lifts into a slow somersault, in which she utters a note in an inverted suspension. And since Scherzinger considers himself more of a singer than a dancer, she worked with music director Stephen Oremus to add a stingray section.

It’s a complex sequence that requires a triple threat like Scherzinger to act fully for 3 and a half minutes and then immediately calm her breathing for a dialogue scene with Warbucks. She was often unsure if she could handle it at all: Scherzinger was recovering from COVID-19 and a ruptured hamstring just before Annie’s rehearsal began.

“I’m not going to lie, I worked very hard to try and develop this technique and stamina again and prepare my body for this rhythm and dance style,” Scherzinger cries. “Finally, I was able to do it, as if I had just returned home. This is what I love to do more than anything else. This kind of storytelling is how I communicate and what I care about so much. ”

This reimagining of We’ve Got Annie is a rare pivotal moment for Grace, a character usually barred from the show’s ensemble numbers. (It also mercifully removes the stereotypical South and East Asian riffs in the film version.) In the NBC special, which also stars Harry Connick Jr., Taraji P. Henson, Tituss Burgess, and Megan Hilty, eight cameras took turns circling Scherzinger , always move as much as the dancers.

“We’re just trying to convey her joy as a character in this moment, as well as her cheerfulness,” says television director Alex Rudzinski. “There is a real intimacy and energy in the show that is almost magical to the home viewer. [versus] if you just captured [it] from a static position “.

Scherzinger hopes We’ve Got Annie will add depth to Grace that is rarely the focus of attention. “She had a dream of a family that she sacrificed long ago for her career,” she says. “At this moment, there is an opportunity to fulfill this dream, even if it is not what she may have thought. I feel so happy to be able to play this empathy and compassion, and this strength and power, and I hope it will inspire others at home as well. ”
