AOC: Climate Action Needed, Not Words To Restore Global Respect

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) – The Democratic Congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the UN climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland is delivering a message from the Biden administration: America is back on the global climate scene.

But one member of the delegation, Congress’s most prominent climate activist, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, added a caution on Tuesday: The US must still back up its words with action.

“We need to really take action to gain international respect for him to gain recognition,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters Tuesday at a summit meeting with other young Democrats who came to Congress in 2018 on platforms focusing on the much larger United States. climate efforts. Ocasio-Cortez answered the question of whether the United States has regained its global position in the fight against climate change.

Former President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. President Joe Biden re-joined the global agreement this year as one of his first acts in office. But Biden has so far failed to implement his largest climate initiative – $ 555 billion in climate legislation that would cut US emissions from climate-damaging fossil fuels – approved by Congress.

“We need to cut emissions to gain recognition for our commitment to climate change. It’s really that simple, ”said Ocasio-Cortez.

Pelosi arrived in the midst of climate talks in Glasgow. She leads a sizable delegation to the Democratic House along with 21 other MPs, including five chairmen of House committees.

Pelosi is one of several congressional delegations to attend the climate talks. This includes both mixed Democratic and Republican delegations and republican groups that have not previously participated in climate summits, who reject climate denial by the Trump administration and want to curb global warming, but under low regulation conditions.

Biden embraced the phrase “America is back” as he returned to global efforts to stave off a full-blown climate crisis by reviving the international alliances and negotiations that Trump turned his back on. Democratic MPs on Tuesday often used Biden’s slogan.

But Biden has the smallest Democratic majority in the US Senate. This allowed two unwavering Democratic senators to block a bill that includes what would be the largest United States investment in cleaner energy.

Protests in Congress have forced Pelosi to brag about Biden’s decisive efforts to tackle climate change in the future.

“Our congressional delegation is coming here just after promoting … the most ambitious and important climate legislation,” Pelosi told reporters at another press conference on Tuesday at the summit.

Pelosi noted that the Biden administration’s actions to reduce US methane emissions – a powerful contributor to climate damage that seeps out of natural gas facilities, oil fields, farms and landfills – has helped more than 100 countries join the non-binding methane pledge.

It is one of several climate initiatives being pursued by Biden that do not require a congressional vote but may be canceled by future administrations.

Ocasio-Cortez credited Biden with a serious fight to pass climate legislation through Congress, she said, but called for future U.S. action to tackle climate change to include grassroots advocates, benefit workers and marginalized communities, and create jobs.

“We have not just returned. We are different, ”said Ocasio-Cortez.

She also reached out to young activists calling on governments to reduce climate-damaging fossil fuel pollution: “I would say, ‘Stay outside. Keep pushing. ‘”
