Apple has started rolling out the Contact Verification feature for iMessage in the beta versions of iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6, which can be found in your device’s Settings but is not working at this time.
The US company had already announced the Contacts password verification function for iCloud accounts in December 2022 along with other safety and security improvements.
Specifically, the technology company defined the feature as a function designed to prevent sophisticated cyber-attacks that typically target politicians, activists, journalists or celebrities, and stated that it would be launched in 2023. Will be expanded globally.
Now, Apple has made progress in its plans to include iMessage contact password verification in the device Settings app in the latest beta version 16.6 for iOS and iPadOS, as they have been able to verify with Macrumors.
However, despite the fact that the function appears to be available, by marking it as active within the Settings options, it hasn’t managed to do any real work at the moment. In this context, the same medium has indicated that it may not be fully implemented now.
This security feature will allow users to use iMessage to verify that they are chatting and sending messages to a genuine and secure recipient and not a malicious entity that has impersonated the recipient or intercepted the message.
In this way, if this function is enabled, a contact verification code is provided which must be verified with the user you wish to contact in order to verify their identity. This security option is already used in other instant messaging applications like WhatsApp.
