Apple is a technology giant and we already knew this, but did you know that the company has been able to generate more revenue from gaming than hard-core brands like Nintendo? That’s right. According to a new report, Apple generated the third-highest revenue among the so-called gaming giants, after China’s Tencent and Japan’s Sony.
With revenue of more than $32 billion in 2021, it’s not surprising to see Tencent leading the charts. The company has popular gaming titles like League of Legends and PUBG Mobile in the market, which offer in-app purchases for various items. Sony ranks second on the list with revenues of $18.2 billion during the same period.

But what is surprising is that Apple is ahead of names like Microsoft and even Nintendo, which have hard-core gaming products like Xbox console and Switch portable gaming console respectively. The iPhone maker made $15.3 billion from the gaming segment.
Apple has arcade platforms on the iPhone and iPad but nothing beyond that. It seems that most of the company’s earnings in gaming come through third-party apps, which have to pay a commission of 15 percent. No wonder companies are suing Apple and Google to stop charging high fees for hosting their apps and paying through them.
The drop in revenue can also be attributed to supply chain issues caused by chip shortages in the industry to Microsoft and Nintendo. But the limited popularity of Xbox compared to PlayStation works against the company. The report said Microsoft made $12.9 billion, while Nintendo was down the list with revenue of $8.1 billion last year.

These figures are for 2021, but with the industry picking up this year, other companies are expected to see an increase in revenue as the demand-supply ratio becomes manageable for the industry.
