Apple rumors are rife that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro may come without a SIM slot, one of the most used hardware features of all time. Could this be a move to motivate users to use eSIM cards?
Apple rumors suggest removing SIM card slot
The rumor about Apple’s massive SIM card removal came from a Brazilian website known as Blog Do iPhone. Also, the website is not yet listed on Apple’s leaked reliability site known as AppleTrack, so it’s important to take this information with a big pinch of salt.
The site says it has an internal source working at an unspecified British company. According to the site, their source says that the tech giant is now experimenting with ways to skip the physical SIM card slot for its upcoming 2023 Pro-Tier iPhones.
Will the physical SIM card be replaced with eSIM?
This means that the iPhone 15 Pro will most likely see a change if Apple doesn’t change its naming scheme. To add, the website, however, doesn’t say that Apple is “definitely” dropping its SIM port, but rather that the company is looking for a switch.
According to a TechRadar story, the fact that the source is an actual outside company of Apple makes the rumor hard to confirm. Two years before that happens, though, it’s still very likely that the company hasn’t yet reached a decision on whether or not they’ll actually drop physical SIM cards in favor of eSIM cards.
What are eSIM cards?
eSIM cards, unlike physical SIM cards, are simply digital versions that are equivalent to the latter. With this, eSIM cards can make the SIM port redundant. Many products such as tablets, smartphones and smartwatches are already using this type of technology, including the Apple Watch.
According to TechRadar, despite many of Apple’s products already using eSIM, the gadget world is still heavily dominated by physical SIMs. To elaborate, in later years, even as eSIMs become more popular, the publication does not believe that Apple would lead the charge.

This change may be impossible for Apple
With high screen refresh rates, 5G and fast charging, Apple has already proven itself by following trends and not trying new things. The publication noted that they do not envisage eSIM card adoption by the average consumer in the next two years, which may still be too soon for 2023.
TechRadar says that it is most likely that Samsung and Xiaomi will take the first steps towards this upcoming future trend as iPhones are not really designed for tech-literate but average tech users.
