LOS ANGELES ( Associated Press) – Colombian Cristian Arango and Ecuador’s Diego Palacios scored within three minutes of each other in the second half as Los Angeles FC secured a 2-0 win over New York Red Bull on Sunday.
MLS leaders LAFC improved to 10-3-3 with their fourth shutout of the season and limited a crucial weekend of activity. Co-president and CEO John Thorrington confirmed after Sunday’s match that the club had signed Welsh striker Gareth Bale and agreed a contract extension with Mexico’s Carlos Vela.
Bale, 32, is expected to move to the United States in the next two weeks after spending the past nine years with Real Madrid.
New York (7-5-5) started 5-2-1 on the road, but lost three straight on the road without scoring.
Arango scored in the 67th minute less than three minutes after entering the match. The midfielder remained in the playing position when he received a pass from Vela. Red Bull defender Dylan Neelis was kicked out of position, giving Arango a clear chance on goal when he fired a forehand shot from the center of the box.
Arango has five goals this season and has scored in three straight MLS games.
Palacios scored his first goal for LAFC in the 70th minute. Uruguay’s Brian Rodriguez launched the attack, but two Red Bull defenders stopped him in the field before finding an unmarked Palacios, who had plenty of time to finish with a left foot against Red Bull goalkeeper Brazilian Carlos Coronel. .
