Around the beginning of the new year, a sudden need for something fresh starts to boil in our stomachs – and the easiest way to relieve this itch is to get a new hairstyle.
Earlier this week, Princess Sofia of Sweden did just that, revealing her straight bangs as she stepped out on Monday with her husband Prince Carl Philip in Stockholm. And she’s not the only one to have joined the revival of the fringe (although there is some debate over whether she retained the image or not).
This winter, stylists in the UAE have noticed a surge in clients looking to get bangs, but while the look can be flattering, getting a haircut is a big commitment, says Jay Crump, owner and chief stylist at Paintbox Hair.
Getting a chop
“I have a few clients who are addicted to fringe, but getting the first marijuana is a big decision,” says Crump. “When clients ask for a fringe, I always tell them to leave and think about it. If they come back for the next meeting and still want to go to it, then we will. “
For Crump, whose showroom is located in the Diamond Business Center in Dubai, her initial hesitation is based on personal experience.
“I myself had a micro-bang, which I cut a few years ago, and it was terrible because I have two bullish moves where your hair gets tousled,” she says with a laugh. “My head was like a pineapple, and my hair flew in all directions. I had to wear the bandage for a year until it grew back. “
For people who are nervous about their first bangs, award-winning stylist Emily Tucker recommends a curtain bang that frames the face on both sides.
Tucker, who wears long bangs herself, has seen a noticeable increase in the number of customers asking to look at the Hair Signature salon in Dubai’s Al Barsha district.
“Curtain bangs are a grown-up take on bangs that are less intimidating than a straight haircut,” she explains. “A lot of people want a change in the new year, and instead of going full blast, curtain bangs are a good way to represent style.
“If people like it, they can get a rougher haircut next time, and if not, it’s easy to grow them.
“Personally, I love having bangs in the winter months when it’s not so hot,” says Tucker. “This is a good chance to wear facial hair without overheating or risking frizz.”
For Bassim Yosef, stylist at We Nails in Dubai Marina, the type of bangs depends on the density of the hair.
“There are triangular bangs, a semicircle shape and a square shape, which most bangs belong to,” says Yosif.
“I would advise anyone thinking of getting bangs to seek out a professional stylist who can recommend the best look for your hair texture.
“A good stylist can also teach you how to style and groom your bangs at home, as it can take a while to get used to if you’re not familiar with the style.”
Celebrity inspiration
As with any celebrity trend, new hairstyles are often scrutinized, and for Crump, Princess Sofia’s bangs could have been better styled.
“In my opinion, Princess Sofia’s bangs lack the weight for such a sharp haircut, and it seems to dominate her face. I doubt it was exactly the image she was aiming for, ”she says.
“I know Jennifer Lawrence has received a lot of criticism for her bangs in Don’t look up, but micro-styling can look really quirky and cool if styled right.
While Lawrence’s appearance was potentially deliberate to match her mildly unhappy character in the film, Crump says that “these bangs definitely don’t wake up like this and you risk looking like Lord Farquad from the movie.” Shrek with such a short blunt cut. “
In a world where many of us walk into a salon with a celebrity haircut preserved in our favorite photos, Crump is more familiar with most A-lister styles.
“For me, the best fringe award goes to Sienna Miller, and I always give her the fringe award,” she says.
“Her bangs have a really nice boho look and are versatile so she can wear it as a full bang or on the side.”
Closer to home, Crump counts TV journalist and drug addict Katie Overy among his clients.
“Katie also has a really versatile bang that looks great no matter how she wears it. It is softened on the sides for an elven look and ease of styling. ”
Style Tips
When it comes to styling bangs, timing is key, Tucker says.
“Once you get out of the shower, you need to think about drying your bangs, otherwise you will have McDonalds-style arches.
“I recommend using a hairdryer with a nozzle and a medium round brush to get good volume and firmness.
“I would also advise using conditioner for bangs, as people can forget to give it a little love and often the hair can break, especially if it is highlighted.”
For Yosif, hair care starts at the salon. “Stylists need to make sure they blow dry their hair and straighten their bangs before cutting,” he says. “From there, you need to trim it very sparingly. You can always cut more, but once you go too far, there is no turning back. “
