Associated Press Exclusive: Dodgers to pay $32 million in luxury tax

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – The Los Angeles Dodgers will have to pay a $32 million “luxury tax” for the second straight season as they are among six clubs penalized for excessively high payrolls.

Following the lockout, payroll in the Major Leagues reached an unprecedented $4.560 million.

The New York Mets set a payroll record for luxury tax purposes with $299.8 million. They surpassed the 2015 Dodgers’ $197.9 million and will pay the tax for the first time since it took effect in 2003, according to data compiled by Major League Baseball and obtained by The Associated Press.

Philadelphia, the National League champion, as well as the New York, San Diego and Boston Yankees also exceeded the $230 million threshold on which the tax applies.

The total tax of $78 million surpassed the previous mark of $74 million set in 2016, when six teams also had to pay.

The Dodgers, taxed more because they exceeded the limit for the second straight year, paid $32.4 million on their $293.3 million payroll for luxury tax purposes.

The figure fell slightly short of the 32.6 million delivered for 2021.

Trevor Bauer hits the payroll in 2022 with $4,109,890 for tax purposes. He actually earned $3,868,131.

Any money saved from the suspension imposed on Bauer under domestic violence policies will be reflected in the Dodgers’ 2023 payroll numbers.

Pitcher Max Scherzer leads the majors in salary with $43.3 million. Under these terms, the Mets had the second largest payroll and were owed $38.8 million.

Under owner Steven Cohen, who bought the club ahead of the 2021 season, New York has increased its projected 2023 payroll by about $400 million based on tax criteria.

The Mets and Dodgers pay the so-called “Cohen Tax”, a fourth cap that starts at $290 million and was agreed to by club and player negotiators in March.

The Yankees would pay $9.7 million, the Phillies $2.9 million, the Padres $1.5 million and the Red Sox $1.2 million. Boston finished in last place in the American League East.

San Diego also exceeded the initial cap for the second year in a row. The majors should be paid by Friday.
