Associated Press Source: Grizzlies trade 2 first-round picks for Laravia

Memphis, Tenn. ( Associated Press) – Jake Laravia just didn’t deserve a first-round pick. The way the Memphis Grizzlies looked at it, it deserved two of them.

According to a person with knowledge of the talks who spoke to The Associated Press, the Grizzlies moved the 22nd and 29th picks to Minnesota for the 19th pick in Thursday’s NBA draft — which is 6-foot — from Wake Forest. 8 Onwards, became Laravia. on condition of anonymity because he had not yet been approved by the league.

Auburn’s Walker Kessler was number 22, and Kentucky’s Tyty Washington was the number 29 pick — both of those players were headed to Minnesota, the man said, pending the league’s business call.

It was part of a busy night of agitation for the Grizzlies, who also secured the right to pick David Roddy at number 23 from Philadelphia as part of another trade. Roddy and injured veteran guard Danny Green were sent to Memphis for D’Anthony Melton, another person with direct knowledge of the matter told the Associated Press.

LaRavia began her college career at Indiana State before relocating to Wake Forest. His transition to the ACC saw his game improve, averaging 14.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season, as well as 1.7 steals.

Laravia shot 56% of the overall from the field, including 38% for Damon Deacon last season.

The Grizzlies made great progress last season, from making a post-season run after the play-in tournament in 2021 to the second-best record in the league last season with 56-26. Memphis was eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals by Golden State, who were the eventual NBA champions.

And some of last season’s success came without first-time All-Star and leading scorer Jay Morant, who missed 25 games during the regular season with injuries.

Memphis went 20-5 in those games, a testament to the team’s chemistry and depth.
